Course Description

This course aims to provide the student with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of data communications, distributed applications, network management and security as they relate to the business environment, business management and staff. It also aims to provide up-to-date coverage of key issues for businesses such as, among others: high-speed networks, mobile networking and TCP/IP technologies from a business perspective, and the use of the Internet, intranets and extranets to support business objectives.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the requirements for this course, students are expected to have attained a knowledge of or proficiency in the following areas:

  1. The fundamental concepts underlying data communications
  2. Different types of networks and the technologies on which they are built
  3. Distributed and client/server application architectures
  4. The Internet, intranets and extranets
  5. Network management aspects and security issues
  6. Business aspects of data communication technologies

Workload

Students taking this course are expected to commit at least 10 hours a week to completling the work. This will include 3 hours per week in class and at least 7 hours a week on average (including non-teaching weeks) on course reading, research, writing and assignment work.
