Course Description

This course provides a detailed investigation into the history, working and challenges/opportunities facing the regional security order in Southeast Asia. The course is designed to examine and contrast the internal dynamics of the regional security order building with external pressures to build a fuller understanding of how ASEAN has developed and how that development shapes its current character. The course also provides an opportunity to assess the contemporary significance of ASEAN to other actors in world politics, regional political elites and the wider citizenry of Southeast Asia.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course should have: 

  1. A comprehensive understanding of the history and contemporary nature of ASEAN as an organization and expression of regional identity.
  2.  A fuller understanding of the role that ASEAN plays in regional, inter-regional and global politics
  3. A deeper insight into the challenges and opportunities facing ASEAN
  4. A demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research, express ideas and construct evidence-based arguments in both written and oral form.

Workload

35 contact hours per semester

A 2-hour lecture session per week for 12 weeks and a 1-hour tutorial per week for 11 weeks of the  semester
