Course Description

This course builds on basic knowledge and skills acquired in the ITAL 1002 course, or equivalent.  It is designed to broaden the knowledge and skills required to use Italian in a variety of contexts. The methodology employed adopts an Intercultural Perspective and integrates a Communicative Approach, aiming to develop all language skills, with linguistic reflection.

Use is made of different media and authentic texts, in addition to the prescribed course materials, with particular attention to Italian films. Class time is divided between interactive language work, linguistic and cultural reflection and computer aided language learning.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Communicate Italian in daily contexts including describing people, places, daily routines, and narrating events in the past.
  2. Comprehend written and multimedia Italian texts describing people, places and aspects of Italian life and culture.
  3. Appreciate relevant aspects of Italian society and culture.
  4. Have a good grasp of Italy's geographical diversity and places of cultural, historical and artistic significance.
  5. Recognize and use a  range of  linguistic features of the Italian language (grammar and lexicon)and relevant meta-linguistic terminology.
  6. Understand and put into practice basic pragmatic aspects of Italian.

In-class grammar quizzes (20%) [LO 5]

In-class class Tests (one listening/comprehension and one reading) (30%) [LOs 2, 3, 5]

One in-class oral test (15%) [LOs 1, 3, 4, 5, 6] 

One multimedia assignment (20%). [LOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] 

Online glossary and regular workbook exercises (15%) [LOs 2, 5]

Workload

4 hours of classes and an average of 6 hours of study outside of class time.
