Course Description

This course offers invaluable training for those interested in pursuing advanced level research in the fields of languages and linguistics, and will appeal to Honours and HDR students with a focus on literature, cultural studies, language teaching, and linguistics. The course will provide hands-on experience in essential components of research: writing up a sustained piece of research; reviewing relevant literature; applying for funding; disseminating research though conference presentations and publishing. By working on one project for the different pieces of assessment throughout the course, students will complete the course with a well developed research project. Specific topics covered will vary from year to year.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. understand how to structure a written piece of research (such as a thesis) to develop an argument in a coherent way;
  2. critically assess and report on literature in their field;
  3. prepare an application for funding or for ethics approval, relevant to their research;
  4. use technology to enhance their research and the presentation of their research
  5. understand the process of disseminating their work.
Indicative Assessment

Funding or ethics application (1,000 words) - 20% [Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4]

Article review (1,000 words) - 20% [Learning Outcomes 2, 5]

In-class presentation: Powerpoint or Poster (15 mins) - 20% [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5]
Presentation or poster will be submitted to the Convenor.

Final paper (2,000 words) - 40% [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5]

Workload
2.5 weekly contact hours, plus 7.5 hours of regular work per week outside class.
Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.
Requisite Statement

For students undertaking PG Applied Linguistics program, they will take Applied Linguistics Research and Writing B (LINGxxxx) as a co-requisite course with Topics in Applied Linguistics B: Language, Text and Discourses.

Recommended Courses

This course introduces graduate students to research in the areas of linguistics and language & culture. Students are not required to have completed any prior course before enrolling in this course. However, students will find the course most beneficial if they are currently engaged in their own research project.
