| Course Description |
Students undertaking this course will build skills in TEM diffraction, imaging and microanalysis for applications in the physical sciences, and demonstrate sound understanding of the simulation and interpretation of this data. Students will have the opportunity to tailor a practical session to suit their particular interests or needs. |
| Learning Outcomes |
On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 1. Use an analytical transmission electron microscope independently for diffraction, imaging and microanalysis; 2. Recognise the critical instrument parameters; 3. Have strategies for manipulating these parameters to give an optimal result; 4. Configure and accessorise a TEM for specific needs; 5. Slign and maintain a TEM in optimum conditions; and 6. Provide quantitative and qualitative outcomes. |
| Indicative Assessment |
Assessment will be based on: 1. Multiple-choice questions and written assignments for tutorials (20%); 2. Mid-term exam (20%); 3. Assessable practicals (20%); and 4. A written report and oral presentation of second practical project (40%). |
| Workload |
Average weekly workload will be two hours of lectures and four hours of associated reading. One hour of tutorials and assessments, which will include virtual and telepresence practicals, will be given for every six hours of lectures, and there will be some associated preparation time. |

| Requisite Statement |
Prerequisite is at least a Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience at the discretion of the Program Convener. This course is for students wishing to major in physical microscopy. MICR8000, MICR8101 and MICR8301 are a co-requisites; there are no incompatible courses.

| Technology Requirements |
Students must have access to computers with fast internet connection, webcams, and Skype in order to access remote learning resources. Access to transmission electron microscopes is required for remote learning. |
