Course Description

This aims to give students practical knowledge and skills in music performance in styles spanning rock, jazz, world, classical and folk. Performance develops each student's technical skills, and challenges and extends their artistic understanding and creativity. Study of an instrument/voice is undertaken through group lessons, classes, ensembles and performance activities through which the student's musical development will be assessed and developed, and range of repertoire of diverse styles and historical periods is explored.

Participation in one of the ANU music ensembles is required as part of this course.

No less than one and no more than five of the following practical activities will be available for group tuition:

  • Drum Kit
  • Bass
  • Guitar
  • Keyboard
  • Voice

Other instruments may be offered subject to demand.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you should be able to demonstrate:

  1. basic techniques, good practice habits, musical and stylistic sensitivity, and the ability to express creative ideas using musical language.
  2. interpretation of relevant literature and repertoire at a basic level.
  3. the stylistic features of the repertoire and the ability to make interpretative decisions based on historical and stylistic appropriateness.
  4. through music performance practice a research-led educational approach.
Indicative Assessment

Precise details of assessment requirements and criteria vary according to the nature of the instrument/ voice and the needs of the student, but typically consist of:

Mid-term 10 minute performance skills exam (individual)   20%   [learning outcomes 1,2,3,]

Final 10 minute performance skills exam (individual)         25%   [learning outcomes 1,2,3,]

Written Online Timed Exam 75 minutes (individual)         20%    [learning outcomes 1,2,3,]

Ensemble assessment (typically assessed ensemble performance and rehearsal journal individual) 25%    [learning outcomes 1,2,3,]

Research-led assignment (written critique/analysis of live or recorded performance 800 words individual) 10% [learning outcomes 4]

A passing grade is required in both the written examination and performance components.

Workload
  • 1-hour instrumental / vocal group tutition
  • 2 hour performance ensemble
  • 7 hours research and preparation


*ensemble selected from available ANU or extenal music ensembles. Note: some ensembles require an audition for entry.
