Course Description

This course will enable students to undertake a project that uses creative practice - composition, performance, multimedia or other formats - to investigate a question of musical research. The project may be group-based or individual. Examples include: composition and performance of a music theatre work; research; composition, performance or recording of classical, jazz and contemporary works; rehearsal and performance of historically-informed early music works; development and trialling of teaching practice and materials; or a participation / observation project with practising music specialists. In most cases the creative project will be a group activity aligned with a research project of the School, but students, with permission, may also undertake individual projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. work independently and collaboratively in response to authentic project demands in one or more creative or professional music roles
  2. demonstrate creative, practical and research skills that can be applied to a range of professional environments within the broad music industry
  3. enhance their professional practice portfolio with a range of applied creative and professional music skills and experience
  4. work independently and in groups to meet authentic deadlines and expectations
  5. recognise and represent to others your creative and professional skills and experience
Indicative Assessment

Assessment will include:

  • a practice/research journal of the project [learning outcome 5] and
  • one or more creative/professional applied research outcomes that are developed specifically to fit each project. The agreed criteria weighting will be documented in an individual learning contract and will be the basis, with the journal, of the final assessment of the project. [learning outcomes 1-4]

 

PROJECT PROPOSAL EXAMPLE 1: 

1. Project proposal (200-250 words) (10%)

2. Reflective journal (2000 words) (50%)

3. Program notes or CD liner notes (1500 words) (30%)

4. Audio-visual recording of the performance (10%)

1. Project proposal (200-250 words) (10%)

2. Reflective journal (2000 words) (50%)

3. Preparation of composition manuscripts (30%)

4. Audio-visual recording of the performance (10%)

 

PROJECT PROPOSAL EXAMPLE 3:

1. Project proposal (200-250 words) (10%)

2. Reflective journal (2000 words) (50%)

3. Development of a series of lessons plans for a particular learning environment (30%).

4. Audio-visual recording of a demonstration lesson (10%)

Workload

The course will require the equivalent of 130 hours of student time.  Total supervised/contact time will not normally exceed 35 hours, however students may be expected to be working for up to 105 hours in an authentic/workplace environment.
