Course Description

This course will give graduate students an opportunity to complete an extended and focused piece of written research on a musical topic. Topics will reflect the current research projects of the school and the wider community, and involve the development of skills in collaborative research. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. conceptualise, implement, and project manage a piece of original research on a musical topic;
  2. identify, locate, and access appropriate primary and secondary sources; 
  3. analyse and synthesize data accurately drawing on at least one theory and using at least one research methodology;
  4. communicate findings using sophisticated language and a clear structure, and present these findings in a professional format; and
  5. work independently with minimal supervision.
Indicative Assessment

Oral presentation of research proposal, 10% [Learning Outcome 4]

Research paper of 6000 words, 90%, [Learning Outcomes 1-5]

Workload

One hour per week of contact with the supervisor, and nine hours per week of private study.

Requisite Statement

Co-requisite: MUSI7003 The Scholar Musician 1 or MUSI8001 The Scholar Musician 2. Permission of the course convenor.

Recommended Courses

A knowledge of music equivalent to a completed undergraduate major in music.
