Course Description

This course offers an advanced approach to analytic philosophy, suitable for students who have a strong background in analytic philosophy, and who may be interested in continuing into 4th year Honours. What is taught will change from year to year. In 2013, our concern will be with some of the ideas of the leading American philosopher, Saul Kripke.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Familiarise with some of the most important ideas in recent metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of language and logic.
  2. Grapple with issues concerning meaning, names, identity, essence, knowledge, paradox and reference.
  3. Develop their own understanding of these issues, and to engage in critical discussion of the issues to which this material gives rise.
Indicative Assessment

Two x 2,500 word essays (45% each) [All Learning Outcomes]

Class participation (10%) [All Learning Outcomes

Each student will be required to give a brief presentation.

Workload

Two hours of seminar each week, one tutorial a week in weeks 2-13, plus seven hours a week private study and assessment preparation.

Eligibility

Should have studied 1000 + 2000 level philosophy courses.

Requisite Statement

At least 12 units of 2000-level or 3000-level Philosophy (PHIL) courses in the area of analytic philosophy (PHIL2060, 2061, 2099, 2080, 2100) or by the written permission of the Course Convenor (permission number).
