Course Description

This course allows high performing students to extend their Masters of Globalisation to include an independent research component.  The course will require the student to devise, in consultation with a supervising academic, their own research project and to write a thesis. The course will allow students to focus in greater depth on an issue or issues in Globalisation and give students an opportunity to develop their independent research skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Scope, plan, implement and write a limited desk-based research task with minimal direction;  
  2. Demonstrate critical appreciation and developed knowledge of a particular globalisation issue;
  3. Develop the capacity to effectively present conceptual frameworks, methods and findings both orally and in writing. 
Indicative Assessment

Refined Proposal of 1,500 words (5%) [LO 1 and 3]

Literature Review 1,000 words (5%) [LO 1 and 2]

Presentation (10%) [LO 3]

Sub-thesis 20,000 words (80%) [LO 1, 2 and 3]

Workload

Students will be expected to spend 520 hours working on the project. This includes meeting times with the supervisor.

Admission to Master of Globalisation (Advanced).

Departmental consent required.

Students will be expected to identify the necessary reading in consultation with their supervisor.

Technology Requirements

Will depend on the topic selected.  Access may be required to statistical software or other specialist software depending on the nature of the research to be undertaken.
