Course Description

This course is designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Spanish language. Grammatical structures and vocabulary are reviewed and extended, and special attention is devoted to enhance the students’ audiovisual, reading, and writing skills by exposing them to authentic materials (literary and non-literary texts, short movies, culture videos, etc.). The course is taught in Spanish.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Express ideas through oral and written production in Spanish.
  2. Demonstrate improvement of Spanish listening skills through continuous audiovisual practice.
  3. Demonstrate improvement of Spanish grammar skills and vocabulary.
  4. Analyse, extract, and use information from spoken and written Spanish texts.
  5. Apply oral skills in real Spanish speaking situations.
  6. Select a range of Spanish vocabulary and grammar forms and apply them in oral and written contexts.
Indicative Assessment

Exams (2, in class, 50 min) (50% each) [Learning Outcomes 1-4, 6]

Oral exam (25%) (1, location TBA, approx. 15-20 min) [Learning Outcomes 1-6]

Composition test (approx. 275 words) (20%) [Learning Outcomes 1-6]

Performance and participation in class (5%) [Learning Outcomes 1-6]

Workload

4 hours of classes per week, plus at least 6 hours of regular work per week outside class.

Eligibility

Students should have an assumed language proficiency equivalent to the successful completion of the course SPAN1002.

Requisite Statement

SPAN1002 or equivalent level of language proficiency demonstrated by sitting a language placement test.
