Areas of Interest History

Europe is a continent steeped in history and Europe's past continues to shape its present.  Students enrolling in the Major in European History will have the opportunity to study modern and contemporary history with an emphasis on Europe’s intellectual and material impact on the wider world.  This major gives students an opportunity to understand events, individuals and processes which have shaped contemporary Europe and much of the modern world.  

 

Learning outcomes

Students completing this major will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • recognise and reflect on the political, social, economic, and cultural factors that have shaped Europe over the past millennium.
  • evaluate competing accounts of European historical development and changing representations of Europe’s past.
  • analyse primary historical evidence from a wide range of sources and in a variety of media and forms. 
  • interpret the past using a variety of theoretical and thematic approaches. 

Requirements

This major requires the completion of 48 units, which must include:

 

12 units from the completion of 1000 level courses from the following list:

EURO1004 - Europe in the Modern Era: Foundations of International Relations (6 units)

HIST1205 - Europe and the Atlantic World, c. 1450-1750 (6 units)

HIST1209 - Terror to Terrorism: A History (6 units)

 

36 units from the completion of 2000/3000-level courses from the following list:

HIST2110 - History and Theory (6 units)

HIST2133 - Human Variations and Racism in Western Culture, c. 1450-1950 (6 units)

HIST2136 - World at War, 1939-1945 (6 units)

HIST2139 - Researching and Writing History (6 units)

HIST2140 - Europe in the 20th Century (6 units)

HIST2141 - The Cold War: 1945-1989 (6 units)

HIST2205 - Europe and the Atlantic World, c. 1450-1750 (6 units)

HIST2213 - Real Men: Masculinities in Western History (6 units)

HIST2214 - The Great War, 1914-1918 (6 units)

HIST2219 - Tudor-Stuart England, c.1485-1714: Politics, Society and Culture (6 units)

HIST2221 - The Birth of Modernity: Britain 1688-1848 (6 units)

HIST2223 - The French Revolution and Napoleonic Europe (6 units)

HIST2226 - Nazi Germany (6 units)

HIST2228 - Enlightenment Worlds (6 units)
