Course Description

BUSN8101 Special Topics in Commerce (Financial Analytics and Investigation) provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of forensic accounting concepts, tools and techniques related to the analysis and presentation of financial intelligence in support of decision-making, regulation and organisational control.

Learning Outcomes

On satisying the requirements for this course, students shuld have the knowledge and skills to:

  • understand and apply a range of analytical techniques to exploit bulk data;
  • examine the relevance and value of advanced analytics within the workplace;
  • develop and apply data mining control for fraud prevention and detection;
  • develop and maintain a network of practitioners of relevance to the workplace.

Workload

Participants taking this course are expected to commit at least one hour per day in non-intensive block days during the four weeks the course is run.  The one hour requirement for non-intensive block days includes requirements to complete:

  • On-line module content (Modules 1,3 and 5)
  • Bulletin board participation on Wattle (Learning Management System)
  • SAS Enterprise Miner application familiarisation and usage (available through Wattle)

Additional time will be required for reading, study and assignment preparation.

Intensive block days will run from 9am to 4pm with appropriate breaks.  A course schedule for the intensive sessions will be provided in the week prior to the first Intensive Block session (Module 2)

 

Dates for each module are:

Module 1 - 2-11 November (on-line)

Module 2 - 12-13 November (intensive block one)

Module 3 - 16-18 November (on-line)

Module 4 - 19-20 November (intensive block two)

Module 3 - 23-30 November (on-line and close)

Eligibility At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree.
Assumed Knowledge and
Required Skills
Knowledge of forensic accounting, inclusive of financial analysis and fraud investigations is not essential. For further details on requisite knowlege, please refer below.
Requisite Statement It is a requirement that participants have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in either Business, Law of Information Systems (or equivalent) and have at least 3 years relevant professional work experience.  Please discuss your requisite experience and coursework with the course coordinator if you are unsure of meeting these requirements.

Technology Requirements Students will need access to the Internet to complete required on-line modules.  Intensive blocks will be taught within existing ANU computer lab facilities.  Access will be provided to the course software (SAS Enterprise Miner) during this time.  No prior knowledge of this software application is required.
