| Course Description |
The objective of this unit is to provide students with the analytical and practical skills to plan and manage a diverse range of projects. This will be achieved by introducing students to a range of issues/concepts involved in the management of projects; providing students with concrete strategies (tools and techniques) for addressing these issues; and broaden the students' overall knowledge of project environments. To this end the course will offer a mix of analytic techniques and practical applications, supported by illustrative case studies. The course comprises the following topics: Project Definition & Start-up, Project Planning - Scheduling Techniques, Project Organisation & Resource Planning, Risk Management; Project Monitoring & Control, Project Quality (Management of Variation). The format for course delivery will be morning lecture sessions followed by afternoon workshop sessions (syndicate style for approximately 3 hours). The emphasis is on the practical aspects of successful project management. Use will be made of project planning software to aid project planning, documentation and control. The course will be assessed by a series of syndicate assignments that will be developed from the workshops. The workshop topics provide a structured approach to project management and will build on each other across the course and be worth 60% of the overall mark. In addition, there will be an individual assignment worth 40%.
