Course Description

The South Pacific has been a privileged locus of European and particularly French imaginative projection since the 18th century. The course will examine French attitudes, as expressed in philosophy and imaginative literature relating to the Pacific, to such categories as the exotic; knowledge; innocence; the savage, both noble and ignoble; civilisation; nature; in an attempt to understand one of Europe's major encounters with itself through the Other.

Learning Outcomes At the end of this course students will have improved their listening, speaking and writing skills through the study and discussions of French current affairs using a variety of learning materials and learning activities. They will also have developed a better understanding of key aspects of French society and society.
Indicative Assessment

Oral presentation (25%), 2,000 word essay (50%) and other work (25%).
