Course Description

For Semester 1, 2009 only
This course provides the student with an opportunity to pursue independent research on a topic of their choice in economics, under the guidance of an academic economist at ANU. Normally the Master's Research Essay will have a strong quantitative component, but analytical and qualitative essays are also allowed.  The student must develop a  clear and interesting research question, bring evidence to bear on this question, and provide detail on the research methodology, all results and implications in a well-articulated and analytical manner.  The essay should not exceed 10,000 words.

For Semester 2, 2009 onwards

This course provides students with support in developing independent research. Class meetings will cover practical aspects of research such as modelling approaches, data handling, common statistical pitfalls, and effective written and oral research presentation. The final product will be an essay of no more than 10,000 words on a topic of the student's choice in economics, under the guidance of an academic economist at ANU.  Normally the final essay will have a strong quantitative component, but analytical and qualitative essays are also allowed.  The student must develop a  clear and interesting research question, bring evidence to bear on this question, and provide detail on the research methodology, all results and implications in a well-articulated and analytical manner.

Learning Outcomes For an economic policy question of your choice, upon successful completion of
this course you will have
1) Critically analysed the existing literature on the policy question
2) Conducted original research and analysis on the policy question.
3) Prepared an effective oral presentation of your analysis.
4) Written a paper on your analysis in the style used for academic journal
publications.
5) Made an original contribution to the public policy debate on an economic
issue.
6) Developed practical research skills applicable to a wide range of policy
questions.
Indicative Assessment

Semester 1, 2009 only: Oral presentation 15%, Essay 85%

Semester 2, 2009 onwards: Proposal and literature review 10%, Oral presentation 10%,  Practical Exercises 10%, Essay 70%

Workload

Semester 1, 2009 only: 8-10 hours independent research weekly.


Semester 2, 2009 onwards: 2 hours class meeting for lecture and discussion every 2nd week.  8 hours independent research weekly.
