Course Description This course focuses on relational database systems and their use in information systems development. It aims to present the foundations of the relational database model, the principles of relational database modelling and design, query languages, and the basics of database application development using a representative database management software package. It also aims to introduce students to more advanced database or database-related technologies including object-oriented databases, hybrid systems and Web-enabled database systems.
Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course you are expected to have achieved:

  • A sound understanding of the basic concepts and theoretical underpinnings of modern relational database systems.
  • Competence in data modelling using the entity-relationship modelling technique as well as translating completed data models in correctly normalized relational database designs.
  • The ability to write correct queries in the standard SQL database query language and also to use a typical graphical query language interface competently.
  • An appreciation of the issues involved in physical database design as well as database security and performance.
  • An understanding of selected advanced database-related topics.

It will be assumed that students have undertaken a first course in information systems and are familiar with computerized systems in general as well as the use of the Windows PC operating system and standard office automation software.
