Course Description	This course aims to provide the student with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of data communications, distributed applications, network management and security as they relate to the business environment, business management and staff. It aims to provide up-to-date coverage of key issues for businesses such as, among others: high-speed networks, mobile networking, ISDN, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and TCP/IP technologies from a business perspective, and the use of the Internet, intranets and extranets to support business objectives.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of this course, students are expected to have attained a knowledge of or proficiency in the following areas: The fundamental concepts underlying data communications Different types of networks and the technologies on which they are built Distributed and client/server application architectures The Internet, intranets and extranets Network management aspects and security issues Business aspects of data communication technologies
Indicative Assessment	Seminar Participation 20% Assignment 20% Final Examination 60% Total 100%
Workload	3 hours per week plus a study commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per week (excluding the seminar).
