Course Description

This course is a compulsory component of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and it must be undertaken before other Courses in the GDLP can be started. Students are introduced to the core skills needed for successful legal practice.

Practical sessions cover:

  • interviewing and advising
  • writing and drafting
  • negotiation and dispute resolution
  • advocacy, and
  • legal research and analysis.

All these skills are applied in the Skills Development (20-day placement option) or Legal Practice Placement (40/60/80 day) courses and reinforced through integration in all the other courses in the GDLP.

Learning Outcomes At the end of the Course students will have been introduced to, and practised, the following Skills - advocacy, writing, drafting, interviewing and negotiating.
Indicative Assessment Students are monitored and assessed on a continuous basis throughout the week in small group sessions. There are a number of more formal assessments during the week in advocacy and negotiation. There are also written assessments in writing and drafting which can be done after the Course has finished.
Workload The Course is intensive and lasts for 5 days. Each day lasts essentially from 9.00am until 5.00pm. There is a certain amount of ‘homework' each night that may take about 1 hour.

Prescribed Texts There are no prescribed texts for the Course other than the Course Content Book and resources provided on or as links to the Course web site.
Preliminary Reading Course Content Book and associated CDs.
Technology Requirements This course makes extensive use of online technology for accessing resources, activities and assessment.  It is in your best interests to ensure you have a secure computer, preferably at home, where you can access all on-line information without restriction or difficulty.

If you intend using IT supplied by your employer, please be aware that you are likely to experience difficulties accessing key on-line resources due to firewall and security restrictions.

The computer you intend to use should meet the following minimum specifications.

  • Broadband (dial-up access is not recommended) access to an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

  • The recommended web browsers are Internet Explorer or Safari

  • Real Player (Free download)
  • Microsoft Word
WebCT relies heavily on the use of "pop ups". You will need to disable "pop up blockers" for WebCT on your internet browser and or Firewall/Anti virus software and toolbars.
