Course Description Knowledge management is a trans-disciplinary approach to improving organisational outcomes and learning, by making optimal use of knowledge. It involves the design, implementation and review of social and technological activities and processes to improve the creating, sharing and application or use of knowledge. The aim of this course is to develop understanding of the many ways in which knowledge contributes to operational efficiency and strategy, and to expose students to some of the key theoretical underpinnings, especially with respect to the theory of the firm.
Learning Outcomes At the completion of this course class members will be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of different types of knowledge assets in an organisation and to be able to design and implement successful strategies for leveraging them
Indicative Assessment
  • Class participation 10%
  • Group presentations 40%
  • Final exam (3 hours) 50%

All components of the above assessment are compulsory and must be submitted.  To achieve an automatic pass grade in this course you must obtain 50% or more as a scaled aggregate mark.

Workload  5 x 4 hour class, 2x 8 hour class(not per week, entire term).

Areas of Interest Management
Eligibility At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree and 3 years professional work experience since graduation.

Required Skills
Students are expected to have the attributes required for admission to the Master of Management or MBA program, and are expected to understand some basic statistical concepts: mean, normal curve, standard deviation, z-score.

Other Information

The objective of this course is to introduce participants to concepts and theories relevant to the acquisition, development and dissemination of knowledge in organisations at the individual, group and organisational level. Multiple perspectives of organizational learning and several current models of knowledge management systems and processes related to internal and external sources of knowledge will be examined. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive framework for designing and implementing successful knowledge management strategies for leveraging the intellectual assets of the organisation.
