Course Description

Ethical decision-making needs to be informed by ethical principles and perspectives, and a range of philosophical questions arise in relation to such principles and perspectives. Such questions include: Is there a definitive set of fundamental ethical principles, eg Do not kill, and, if so, what are they?; What theoretical perspectives are available, and what are their strengths and weaknesses, eg. utilitarianism, Kantianism; What precisely is the relation between ethical theory and practical ethical decisions?

Indicative Assessment

6,000 word essay (80%) and class presentation (20%).

This course will be offered in the 1st semester of the program.
