Program Requirements

The Bachelor of Translation (Asian Region) requires completion of 192 units including:

a. Core component: six courses (36 units) from approved coursework offerings in the Faculty of Asian Studies and the Faculty of Arts. Noting the two compulsory courses listed below, an indicative list of courses from which you may choose, includes:

ASIA1025 Individual & Society in Asia and the Pacific A
ASIA1030 Individual & Society in Asia and the Pacific B
ASIA1001 OR (in second or later year)
ASIA2001 Language in Asia
ASIA2003 Chinese Fictions
ASIA2034 Modern Chinese Fictions
ASIA2264 How to Live in the Real World
ASIA3008 Orientalism and the Study of Asia
ASIA3201 Clio in Asia: A European Muse Meets Her Sisters
ASIA3210 Readings in Modern Chinese History

Compulsory Courses (two must be taken)

LING1021 OR (in second or later year) LING2021 Cross-Cultural Communication (only one may be taken) LANG3001 AND/OR LANG3002 Translation Across Languages

b. Asian language component: fourteen language courses (84 units), in which a student will pursue the study of an Asian language to the highest level possible in the Faculty. A Faculty Asian language major (8 courses / 48u) must be achieved. Remaining courses may be devoted first, to a second Asian language sequence (minimum four courses) and then to any other Asian language courses.

c. Elective component: four courses ? unprescribed. Students may take courses relevant to the cultures and societies whose languages they are studying. Students pursuing an Honours degree in Asian Studies are required to have completed an Asian language major in this degree. Additional language courses may be drawn from the elective area.

d. Year-in-Asia: an approved study package which includes the equivalent to two semesters (48u) at a university or equivalent tertiary institution in Asia.
