Course Description

In this course, students will undertake a substantial research project on a development policy or issue of their choice in order to complete the Research component of the MAAPD (Research) program. The course is designed for students wanting to do in-depth research as a component of their MAAPD studies as well as providing a preparatory opportunity for PhD studies. In collaboration with the Course Convenor and a nominated supervisor, students will choose a topic of interest to them and complete a research project based on this topic, which may include an option for limited field work. In the latter case, ethics clearance would generally be required. 

 A supervisor with knowledge or experience in the relevant field of study from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) will  be nominated, with whom the student is expected to schedule regular contact for  advice and support. The course program will involve the development of a research proposal, presentation of a seminar and the write-up of the project in a sub-thesis of 20,000 words. 

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the course will gain the knowledge and skills to:

  • Design research activities, including identifying and reviewing relevant literature, developing research questions and identifying appropriate research methods;

  • Communicate research findings to relevant audiences in the form of a sub-thesis.
Indicative Assessment Seminar presentation and research proposal (15%), Thesis (85%).
Workload

Flexible delivery, arrangements will be made to ensure regular student contact with supervisor. For off-campus students, arrangements can be made for remote presentation of the seminar proposal.  At least one draft  is expected to be submitted a minimum of two weeks before final submission of the sub-thesis.

Requisite Statement Students for the MAAPD(Research), will have completed the MAAPD program in any of the specialisations and received a High Distinction grade average.  Exceptions can be made special circumstances
