Course Description This unit will consider the encounter of western culture with non-western cultures. In particular it will examine the reception of non-western art and material culture: the ways in which these arts and objects have been categorized, collected and displayed; how they have been described, discussed and judged; and how they have influenced the development of western culture. The unit will explore aspects of the relationship of cultural exchange and the histories of colonialism and will consider how contemporary indigenous arts re-frame those histories. There will be a particular emphasis on the reception of Aboriginal art in the Australian context.
Indicative Assessment

Written essay (65%), oral presentation (25%), attendance and participation (10%); or equivalent.

Attendance at lectures and tutorials is compulsory.
