| Course Subject | Biology |
| Offered in | Winter Session, 2011, Second Semester, 2011, Spring Session, 2011, Winter Session, 2012, Second Semester, 2012, and Spring Session, 2012 |
| Unit Value Range | 6 units to 18 units |
| Course Description |
This course is designed to be taken with BIOL6016 (Population Genetics), BIOL6243 (Advanced Genetics and Bioinformatics) or BIOL6019 (Analyses Tools for Population Genetics). This project based course will give students the opportunity to extend their practical experience in advanced molecular genetic analysis. The course is underpinned by the theory presented in one or more of the above courses and provides students the opportunity to enhance their depth of understanding of the theory; strengthen analytical and computing skills; and further enhance oral and written skills. |
| Learning Outcomes |
On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 1. Use relevant molecular genetic software packages with proficiency and confidence to conduct a research project involving the analysis of real molecular genetic data with minimal supervision |
| Indicative Assessment |
Written report that demonstrates capacity to analyse, interpret and critically evaluate real data sets in relation to the literature and the biological context (100%; LO 1-3) |
| Workload |
Will be tailored to meet the needs of each student, but ordinarily will involve completion of a series of computer-based tutorials over either an intensive block, or spread over the semester. |
| Course Classification(s) | AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs. |
| Requisite Statement |
Bachelor's degree. This course must be taken in conjunction with, or following successful completion of, one or more of the following courses: BIOL6016 (Population Genetics), BIOL6243 (Advanced Genetics and Bioinformatics) or BIOL6019 (Analyses Tools for Population Genetics) |
| Recommended Courses |
Knowledge of genetics equivalent to one or more of BIOL6016, BIOL6243 or BIOL6019. |
| Consent Required | Consent is required prior to enrolling in this course. |
