BIOL8242 Advanced Evolution and Bioinformatics 2

Offered By Biology Teaching and Learning Centre
Academic Career Graduate Coursework
Course Subject Biology
Offered in BIOL8242 will not be offered in 2011
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description This course must be taken after BIOL8241 and is designed to give students the opportunity to extend their analytical skills. Each student will conduct an independent project in order to gain practical skills in bioinformatics. This unit gives students the opportunity to put their theoretical and applied understanding of molecular evolutionary principles learned in BIOL6241 into practice. The course will be taught in a series of computer-based practical classes, combining formal instruction in the use of bioinformatic software with small group based learning and one-to-one tuition. The emphasis of this course is on problem-based learning, developing individual interest areas and stimulating creative approaches to data analysis.
Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students should be able to demonstrate:

1. practical computer-based analysis skills in bioinformatics
2. an understanding of the molecular evolutionary principles underpinning bioinformatic analysis
3. competency in the preparation of a scientific publication.

Indicative Assessment Assessment will be based on a major report on the student's independent investigation of a DNA sequence and associated literature research (100%; LO 1-3).
Workload Computer-based tutorials over a 6 week block
Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs. and SpecialistSpecialist courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide for the acquisition of specialist skills; or 'second degree' and higher level of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs; or knowledge associated with professional accreditation.
