Course Description will be broadened to include possible contributions of literature research leading to an essay, seminar attendance and reporting, and journal club participation and presentation. This is consistent with current Learning Outcomes and Assessment.

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will:

1. Plan, and engage, in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation of a chosen research topic relevant to the study of biochemistry and molecular biology
2. Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions
3. Engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
4. Appropriately apply statistical or other evaluation processes to original data
5. Understand and apply ethical standards of conduct in the collection and evaluation of data and other resources
6. Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.

The nature and weightings of assessment items will be customised in negotiation with each student, but will be based on:

• Research essay on an agreed topic, showing evidence of wide reading and understanding as well as critical analysis and/or appropriate use of advanced techniques (LO 1-6)
• Presentation of research in an academic seminar (LO 6)

This is a variable unit load course and the unit weighting and contact hours must be discussed with the convener before enrolling.

Bachelor degree;

As a guide, this course requires a Bachelor of Science or equivalent with a major in the field of biological sciences with relevant experience or academic achievement. First year Biology and first year Chemistry are essential.
