This course explores the challenges faced by conservation biologists from an Australian perspective. Students will be introduced to the concepts and context of this multidisciplinary science and then examine a range of problems faced by conservation biologists. The topics will include: biodiversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels; the process and causes of extinction; conservation of populations and species; conservation of communities and ecosystems; methodological issues including dealing with uncertainty and complex systems; and the interaction between science, policy and politics.

This course assumes the general Master of Contemporary Science program prerequisite of a science-based Bachelor’s degree with appropriate work experience in a relevant area, or equivalent.
