Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the qualitative research paradigm, issues of ontology, epistemology and methodology, research design using qualitative research methods, and theory building and theory testing. It focuses on several selected research approaches that will prepare students to undertake sound qualitative research. Key topics include qualitative research paradigm assumptions, qualitative research genres, research planning, ethical issues, interview method, participant observation, conduct of focus groups, case study method, the critical incident technique, analysing and interpreting data, text-analysis software, and writing and publishing qualitative research.

Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • identify ‘ways of knowing' appropriate to business research
  • identify the place of theory building and theory testing
  • address the formulation of research question(s) and suggest a qualitative research method for addressing this question
  • understand the principles of research design, sampling, and ethical issues in a
  • qualitative research context
  • appreciate qualitative methods and techniques such as interviewing, content analysis, observational notes,document analysis, participant observation, focus groups, and critical incident techniques
  • explain the principles of case study, action research, ethnography, phenomenology, and grounded theory methods
  • comprehend the role of computers in data management and analysis
  • write a qualitative research proposal
  • plan and execute a qualitative research project
  • publish the outcomes of a qualitative research project

Workload

3 contact hours per week.  This course assumes at least 7 hours of private study by enrolled students. Students who have permission to audit the course are also expected to fully take part in the course, to read all required readings, participate in discussions and attend all workshops.
