CHEM2201 Applied Spectroscopy

Later Year Course

Offered By Research School of Chemistry
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Chemistry
Offered in Summer Session, 2011, First Semester, 2011, Second Semester, 2011, and Summer Session, 2012
Unit Value 3 units
Course Description

This course is designed to develop an understanding of spectroscopy and its application in the elucidation of the structures of molecular compounds.  Topics to be covered in the course will include aspects of infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

Honours Pathway Option (HPO)

Completion of 6 additional lectures at a more advanced level. It is expected that all students in the PhB (Hons) or direct entry Honours degree programs enrolled in CHEM2201 will complete the HPO.

Note: This course is delivered on-campus during Semester 1 and online during Semester 2.  Summer session is online during 1 Jan-31 March.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Recognise the roles and limitations of various forms of spectroscopic analysis
2. Apply spectroscopic data to solve problems of structural analysis
3. Utilise spectroscopic data in order to structurally characterise unknown molecules

Indicative Assessment

Assessment will be based on:

  • Exam (60%; LO 1, 2, 3)
  • Assignment (40%; LO 1, 2, 3)
Workload

30 hours of lectures and tutorials on-campus (or online) with a further 30 hours of independent learning.
