Course Description

This course will involve students in the whole process of production. They will perform, design and stage-manage, etc, a play that will be directed by one of the Theatre Studies staff. The play will be chosen from plays written in the period from 5th century B.C. to the end of the Middle Ages and will explore the particular problems involved in presenting plays from this period to a modern audience.

Courses are designed to provide students with the opportunity to study theory through its practical application.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have experienced the process of the production of a major work of theatre through performance under full production conditions.

They should also be able to

  1. express in an oral and written form an understanding of the process of staging a production of a major theatre work.
  2. critically analyse the selected major work.
  3. carry out research to select and combine material in order to question and analyse key concepts.
  4. work in a team with other students to achieve a collective goal.
  5. apply theoretical and empirical data in performance.

 

Indicative Assessment

2,000 word essay (25%), tutorial presentation (25%) and workshop assessment and end of semester performance (50%).

Workload

Four hours per week: one 1-hour lecture, one 1-hour tutorial and one 2 hour workshop.
