Course Description	Why are some countries richer than others? Why have some countries experienced growth miracles while others have experienced stagnation or even growth disasters? This course will review various theories proposed for the large differences in living standards across countries. The course will focus on “macro” explanations, such as differences in savings rates, capital stock, geography, institutions, foreign aid, and globalization. The course will use historical and contemporary data to test the relevancy of the various explanations.
Indicative Assessment	By examination, assignments, and an essay.
Workload	Lectures and tutorials as for the pass course, together with additional tutorials throughout the semester or a longer honours essay.

Requisite Statement	ECON1101 Microeconomics 1 and ECON1102 Macroeconomics 1, or ECON1100 Economics 1 (H), or ECON1001/1011 Economics I (P or H).
