Course Description

This course is an introduction to the economic analysis of law: the study of interactions between rational, optimising agents within various legal and institutional settings. The goal is to teach students how to apply the tools of economic analysis to gain insights about the economic effects of legal rules and institutions and their development over time. The course covers advanced topics in the economic analysis of tort law, property law, contract law, criminal law, litigation and settlement, and other topics as time permits.  Readings and course material will be drawn from the scholarly literature, primarily journal articles. 

Indicative Assessment

A 1-hour in-term examination, and a 3-hour final examination.

Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.

Eligibility

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with introductory level courses in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics
