| Course Description | This course is a survey of the key literary texts of the international movement in the arts known as Modernism. While the emphasis is on the classic writings of the period 1890-1940 - that is, works by writers such as Joseph Conrad, D. H. Lawrence, William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf - some less well-known Modernists such as Jean Rhys and Katherine Mansfield will be considered. The course will consider Modernism within the context of historical upheavals such as World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression and the rise of Fascism as well as cultural changes such as the first wave feminism and the impact of new technologies (the cinema, the motor car, the gramophone, and so on). |

To familiarise students with the major authors and texts of the period as well as the ideological aims and concerns of the international movement, Modernism. To develop and reinforce methods of literary criticism. |
