| Course Description |
Through a close analysis of selected feature films which utilise artistic and art-historical references as part of their expressive strategies, the course will explore both the nature of visual representation, common to cinema and the visual arts, as well as the particular characteristics which distinguish each of these as separate art forms. Among the films studied: Minnelli's An American in Paris, Tarkovsky's Andrej Rublev, Jarman's Caravaggio, Greenaway's The Draughtsman's Contract, Welles' F for Fake, and Ruiz's Hypothesis of a Stolen Painting. |

Two 2,000 word essays and a tutorial presentation. |

| Requisite Statement |
For the Film Studies major, Intro to Film Studies FILM1002 and Intro to Film Genres FILM 1003 for students taking it for Art History, Intro to Art History ARTH1002 and Intro to Modern Art ARTH1003; or two courses from the Faculty of Arts or the permission of the Film Studies Convener. |
