Course Description

After a brief overview of the history of French cinema, the course will study films by some of the leading French directors of the past half century. Consideration will be given to the innovations of the "Nouvelle Vague", with respect to both the French and Hollywood traditions. The cinéma d'auteur approach will be followed through a study of different styles of film-making.

Indicative Assessment

Oral presentation (25%), 2,000 word essay (50%) and two-hour examination (25%).

Workload

Four hours per week: a two-hour screening; a one-hour lecture; a one-hour tutorial

Requisite Statement

For students taking the course as part of a French major: FREN3007 Intermediate French 2 or permission of convenor. This course can also be credited towards a major in Film Studies.  Interested students should first speak to the course coordinator, Dr Peter Brown.
