| Course Description |
In this introductory course students continue to develop basic listening and reading comprehension, as well as oral and written German communication skills. The course furthermore provides an introduction to basic German grammar and training in language learning strategies. Students are introducted to life and culture of the German-speaking societies and principles of intercultural communication. |
| Learning Outcomes | On successful completion, the student will be able to communicate in simple (1) spoken and (2) written German about topics covered in the course. This will include engaging in a simple conversation of predictable content, as well as reading and writing about personal details and other topics covered in the course. In addition, the student will be able to (3) read and (4) listen for gist to more complex and/or more rapidly spoken German. The student will have gained a first awareness of (5) aspects of life and culture of the German speaking societies and (6) principles of intercultural communication. |
| Indicative Assessment | This course has continuous assessment to provide students with regular feedback on their learning progress. Proposed are: five tests (65%), two written assignments (10%), one written communication task (15%), one oral examination (10%). |
| Workload |
This course is delivered on-campus and has 4 contact hours per week. The course is designed for interactive face-to-face teaching and learning and students are expected to regularly attend classes and to participate actively. this enables regular input of the German language which is essential for the development of good language skills. Students with conflicting classes should consult the course coordinator. In addition to the contact hours, students are required to do regular homework (approximately one hour for each contact hour) plus all scheduled assignments and tests. |
