GERM2110 Structure of German

Later Year Course

Offered By School of Language Studies
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject German
Offered in First Semester, 2011
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

The course will provide a linguistically-informed analysis of the main structures of German, encompassing the structure of sounds, words, phrases, clauses and sentences as well as some elements of paragraph and text structure. It will have a theoretical orientation, outlining principles of linguistic analysis and presenting structures in the context of structure systems rather than language practice. Reference will be made to structures of English. Classes will be held in German.

Learning Outcomes On successful completion, students will be able to view German grammar from a linguistic rather than a pedagogical perspective. They will have developed an understanding of how general principles of language structure are reflected in the grammar of contemporary German. Students will have acquired the analytical tools to access underlying relationships between seemingly different aspects of German grammar. This will widen their understanding of German grammar and enable them to invoke these linguistic generalizations to enhance their own learning of grammatical rules.
