Course Description (a) development of basic listening and reading comprehension skills
(b) development of basic oral and written communication skills
(c) introduction to German grammar
(d) training in and reflection on language learning strategies
(e) life and culture of the German-speaking societies
(f) intercultural communication
Learning Outcomes On successful completion, the student will be able to communicate in very simple spoken and written German about topics covered in the course. This will include engaging in a very simple conversation of predictable content, as well as reading and writing about personal details and other topics covered in the course. In addition, the student will be able to read and listen for gist to more complex and/or more rapidly spoken German. The student will have gained a first awareness of aspects of life and culture of the German speaking societies and principles of intercultural communication.
Indicative Assessment Graduate students may attend joint classes with undergraduates but can expect more rigorous asessment and additional assignment work, tailored to their interests.
Workload

4 contact hours per week plus approximately 6 hours of regular work per week outside class.
