Course Description

Topics for study may include: Homeric epic, drama (Euripides and Sophocles), historiography (Herodotos, Thucydides, Xenophon, oratory (Lysias, Demosthenes), art, architecture, Athenian society, Plato and Aristotle, Hellenistic Alexandria, New Testament, the novel. In studying the chosen text or texts and its political, social, and literary context, students continue their study of Ancient Greek language. In 2011 Semester 2  we are reading selections from Lucian's Satirical Sketches.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to introduce students to the Greek of Homer's epics and to bring them to a point where they can read the epic dialect with some fluency. By the end of the semester they should be able to read and comprehend significant portions of Homer's Iliad and to handle other sections with the assistance of dictionaries and other resources.

Indicative Assessment

Exercises (20%), 2,000-3,000 words essay (25%), mid-semester test (15%) and final examination (40%).
