Course Description	The class will read Books 6 and 7 of Homer's Odyssey (a total of 678 lines). This is the secion of the story that deals with Odysseus' stay on the island of Scheria with the Phaiakians (and the young princess Nausikaa). We shall also read extracts of Book 19.
Learning Outcomes	This course introduces students to the Greek of Homer's epics and brings them to a point where they can read the epic dialect with some fluency. By the end of the semester students should be able to read and comprehend significant portions of Homer's Odyssey; they will be able to handle other sections iwht the assistance of dictionaries and other resources. Students will become acquainted with the Odyssey as a whole. They will explore the notion of genre as it applies to the epic and consider a range of the interesting interpretive problems that are associated with the poem. Students will review and extend their understanding of the grammatical constructions of Ancient Greek and they will extend their Ancient Greek vocabulary.
Indicative Assessment	Exercises (20%), 2,000-3,000 words essay (25%), mid-semester test (15%) and final examination (40%).
