| Course Description |
Topics for study may include: Homeric epic, drama (Euripides and Sophocles), historiography (Herodotos, Thucydides, Xenophon, oratory (Lysias, Demosthenes), art, architecture, Athenian society, Plato and Aristotle, Hellenistic Alexandria, New Testament, the novel. In studying the chosen text or texts and its political, social, and literary context, students continue their study of Ancient Greek language. In Semester 2, 2009 the course will be 'Battle for freedom, Herodotos Book 8'.

| Learning Outcomes |
This course aims to develop students' ability to read Greek prose, increasing familiarity with grammar, knowledge of vocabulary, and fluency in reading the language. By the end of the course they will be able to read substantial parts of Herodotos Bk 8 unaided. In addition they will have acquired some understanding of Greek historical writing and of Herodotos' methods as a historian and as a literary writer, together with some familiarity with the historical events of 480 BC. |
