Course Description

Students should

(a) read a variety of Indonesian socio-historical, political and literary texts

(b) learn to hold sophisticated discussions in Indonesian texts and retain the essential nuances

(c) express their ideas about these topics in speech and writing in standard Indonesian

Learning Outcomes

Students should

(a) be able to hold discussions in Indonesian on a range of personal topics and current and historical        issues

(b) be able to express their ideas orally in academic style Indonesian

(c) be able to conduct research and produce essays in standard written Indonesian

(d) be familiar with a variety of Indonesian socio-historical, political and literary texts

Indicative Assessment

Class participation 10% (ongoing)

Oral presentation for class discussion on assigned reading materials 10% (during the semester)

Two written tests in class of 500 or 600 words for postgraduate 20% (10% each)

Speech of 10 minutes duration for undergraduates and 12 minutes for postgraduates 10% - (mid semester)

Long essay of 1000 words for undergraduates or 1700 words for postgraduates 20%

A two hour final examination 30% (during examination period)

Note: A minimum attendance of 60% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the final examination.

Workload

Three hours a week.
