| Course Description |
This course focuses on relational database systems and their use in information systems development. It aims to present the foundations of the relational database model, the principles of relational database modelling and design, query languages, and the basics of database application development using a representative database management software package. It also aims to introduce students to more advanced database or database-related technologies including object-oriented databases, hybrid systems and Web-enabled database systems. |

| Workload |
Teaching for this course is likely to be in the format of one 3 hour seminar per week; however, enrolment numbers may dictate that it be run differently. You should aim to spend at least twice as much time in private study per week as there are actual contact hours (i.e. lectures and tutorials/laboratory classes) for the course. |

Assumed Knowledge and Required Skills |
It will be assumed that students have undertaken a first year course in information systems and are familiar with computerised systems in general as well as the use of the Windows PC operating system and standard office automation software. |
