Course Description

Syllabus: The course is designed to provide a wide range of knowledge and skills which are necessary to develop the Japanese communication skills at the beginner’s level, and to establish a basis of further study of the language.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester, the successful learner of the course will be expected:

(i) To have good basic knowledge of the system of the Japanese language;

(ii) To be able to produce and comprehend various types of simple sentences/ expressions;

(iii) To be able to communicate in Japanese in situations involving the day-to-day life and some limited topics;

(iv) To obtain basic knowledge of Japanese culture and people; and

(v)  To have good self-study skills of the Japanese language.

Indicative Assessment

Oral tests (40%)
In-class tests (10%)

Online assignments (15%)
Class performance (5%)
Final exam (Listening and Grammar) (30%)

Requisite Statement

No previous study of the Japanese language is required. Persons with some previous experience of Japanese may be placed in this course as a result of the centre placement test, or by permission of the course coordinator

Prescribed Texts

The textbook is Nihongo ga Ippai. Refer to the course Wattle site for information on obtaining the textbook.
