Course Description

The course will examine certain characteristic features of modern Japanese from a general linguistic perspective. A selection of topics will be discussed in conjunction with relevant literature.

Indicative Assessment

A one-hour midterm test (22.5%), an essay of approximately 2500-3000 words (30%), weekly short assignments (totaling 15%), participation in discussions (10%), a three-hour final exam (22.5%).

Introduction to the Study of Language (LING1001 / LING2001) or permission of the coordinator.

Some knowledge of Japanese is desirable but not essential.
