| Course Description |
This course focuses on the teaching of Japanese to English-speaking learners from the viewpoint of the linguistic and sociocultural content of Japanese language courses. The broad areas of sound, writing, grammar, vocabulary and discourse are surveyed from this perspective, with detailed consideration of specific topics and analysis of learner errors. |
| Learning Outcomes |
At the end of the course students should have a solid linguistic knowledge of the Japanese language in terms of its sound–system, writing–system, vocabulary, grammar, discourse and so on. |
| Indicative Assessment |
Four reports of 1000 words (20%), Two assignments (10%), Two presentations (20%), Mid term exam (20%) and Final exam (30%), to be confirmed at first lecture. |

| Requisite Statement |
Non-native speakers of Japanese are required to have successfully completed Spoken Japanese 4 and Written Japanese D at credit level or above, or equivalent level of competence, in order to take the course at undergraduate level (JPNS3012). Students may be exempted from these requisites if they have passed the required level in the Japanese placement test, or have permission from the course convenor. Native speakers of Japanese are expected to have completed their fist year of study at a university. JPNS6512 forms part of the coursework for the Graduate Diploma/MA program specialising in Japanese Applied Linguistics. Students at this level normally hold a Bachelor degree, with a major in Japanese in the case of non-native speakers. Incompatible with JPNS6512 |
