| Course Description |
A combination of Japanese language study and approved study in a discipline. This coursework will be undertaken in Japan under arrangements made between the ANU and the host university. Students will be required to write a research essay (see indicative assessment below) and pass an oral exam based on that essay. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Through their studies and in-country experience students will improve their fluency in all aspects of Japanese language, become familiar with the customs and daily-life culture of Japan, as well as become accustomed to the Japanese academic environment. It is generally expected the students successfully completing the Year-in-Japan program will be at or near the equivalent of Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. | Indicative Assessment |
Succesful completion of all courses at Japanese host institution 4,000 character research essay in Japanese & oral defense comprised of the following components - Title & Abstract (5%) Annotated Bibliography & outline (10%) Final version (50%) Oral Defense (35%) An overall mark of 70% or higher is required in order to pass the course |

| Requisite Statement |
Students who start their Japanese language studies with Spoken Japanese 1 and Written Japanese A need to have completed the Japanese language major, as well as at least six courses in their non-language major in the Faculty of Asian Studies. Students who start their Japanese language studies with Spoken Japanese 3, Written Japanese C, or more advanced courses need to have completed at least six courses in their language major, and at least six courses in their non-language major in the Faculty of Asian Studies. |
