Course Description

Extensive reading in contemporary Japanese texts on social, religious, historical and cultural themes, and discussion of issues raised. No English traslation involved. Essays in Japanese will be required.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to be able to read texts related to Japanese culture, society, tradition and philosophy as well as Japanese people, their psychology and way of life on their own with dictionaries.  Anyone who wants to read about Japanese society and people written by native Japanese should feel confident to read them deeply and comprehensively.  All classes are in a seminar format and are entirely conducted in Japanese.

Indicative Assessment

Two 1,200-ji (characters) summaries of the reading texts in Japanese 20%; one annotated bibliography 10%; two oral presentations based on the reading texts 30%; two half an hour oral interviews with the instructor 30%; self-assessment 10%.

 

Workload

Students can expect to spend 10 hours per week on this course inclusive of Three contact hours per week.
