Course Description

Readings from representative works dealing with Japanese culture and society both modern and pre-modern.

Learning Outcomes

Students will build advanced language skills in reading, writing, cultural analysis and debate in Japanese and an understanding of some of the features of Japanese culture and society.

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Understand Japanese material related to the course subject area;
  • Develop the confidence and expertise to engage in Japanese at an advanced level, and
  • Develop content summary skills
  • Develop information gathering, presentation and analytic skills – through group and individual activities
  • Develop academic writing and presentation skills
  • Develop higher level comprehension skills

Assignments/ In class quizzes  15%

Group Oral Presentation & Report  30%

Individual Project  25%

Final Exam 30%

Graduate students attend joint classes with undergraduates but may expect more rigorous assessment and additional assignment work, tailored to the graduate student's interests.
